Despite the more than 500 Arabic and Persian news outlets reporting stories from and about the Middle East, there is currently no affordable means for English speakers to gain access to much of this content. Mideastwire.com aims to close this gap by offering a daily email newsletter of concise, translated briefs from and about the Middle East.

Through a special arrangement with MidEastWire.com, we are able to reprint MidEastWire's "Daily Iraq Monitor" on this website. For more news from the Middle East, consider a paid subscription to MidEastWire.

Iraqi Police have reported that an explosion took place in the Al-Hillah area, south of Baghdad. The police said that a booby-trapped car exploded in a crowded bus station, killing five people and wounding three others.

A large explosion rocked the Shi'i Al-Amir shrine in the area of Al-Ashar in central Basra in southern Iraq. Security sources confirmed that scores were killed and wounded in the explosion. The Al-Amir shrine is counted among the renowned Shi'i mosques which are frequented by the Shi'is in the Al-Ashar area for prayers and Ashura rituals.

The Al-Arabiya correspondent in Al-Ramadi has reported that unidentified gunmen have assassinated Maj-Gen Sa'b al-Rawi, who was nominated for the post of military commander in Al-Anbar Governorate. The assassination took place in front of the general's house in the city of Al-Ramadi. Our correspondent added that Al-Rawi was the main negotiator with the US troops in the area. - MIDEASTWIRE.COM, Middle East
