At 0900 gmt the station reported: "Massive explosions woke up the people of Baghdad on the first day of the new year." Quoting Iraqi police sources, the station said four bombs had exploded, targeting police patrols and causing damage to restaurants. "At least" two of the four explosions were caused by booby-trapped cars, according to the same sources. Reporting further on the explosions in its 1000 gmt news summary, the station said a total of 13 people were wounded in the four explosions.

In another report, the TV added that the Iraqi forces on January 1 defused an explosive charge near Al-Shurtah tunnel in Al-Ma'mun neighbourhood, western Baghdad.

In its 1000 news summary, the TV added: "A booby-trapped car targeting a US military patrol exploded near the city of Bayji, north of Baghdad, today. Police sources in the governorate of Salah al-Din said 16 Iraqi civilians were wounded in the explosion."

Quoting a US Army statement, it added that a US soldier was killed on December 31 when a mortar shell fell on a US military patrol in southern Baghdad.

At 1200 gmt, the station led its news summary with a report quoting the Palestinian diplomatic mission in Iraq today as saying that the son of the Palestinian cultural attache in Iraq was killed only hours before the new year. It added that the mission demanded an investigation into the killing of Azzam Ibrahim Muhsin, 17, while he was in his car in western Baghdad.

In another report, the TV added: "Eight car bombs exploded on the first day of the new year. Iraqi security and medical sources said that seven Iraqis, including two policemen, were wounded in the explosion of three car bombs and an explosive charge in Baghdad. An Interior Ministry source noted that a suicide bomber ploughed his booby-trapped car into the area of Al-Masbah in Al-Karradah neighbourhood in the center of Baghdad, wounding one person." The station went on to say that another car exploded near a cinema in the new Baghdad area without causing any casualties. Another car parked in Al-Maghrib Street in northern Baghdad exploded when an Iraqi army patrol was travelling in the area, causing damage to a number of cars. Reporting on another incident, the station said an explosive charge detonated near a police patrol at an intersection in southern Baghdad, wounding two policemen. - Al Sharqiyah, Iraq
